Yeah, for me, absolutely. I was never the biggest Loveless fan anyway. The flaws on SD are more readily apparent, but the sonic world that Corgan and Vig create is unmatched. If Corgan didn't descend into madness so early on, the Pumpkins might have been a consideration for best American band.
Great writeup even if I disagree on a number of points, although the only one I’d disagree strongly enough to mention here: no love for Try, Try, Try or I of the Mourning on MACHINA? even if the production makes anything hard rock a mess, I always thought there was at least a great pop EP buried there
I call out "Try, Try, Try" as MACHINA's highlight (but I do so in my writeup of MACHINA II)... I would like it more if not for the bleary production - same as "Raindrops + Sunshowers" (though it works better there). That hypermodern, hyperdigital 80s sound is just not for me. I recommend the version on MACHINA II: it's better.
